Black Friday Group Hike to Mt. Tammany
Al Berrios
We opted out on Black Friday and it was amazing!
Huge shout out to this crew who joined me up Mt. Tammany on this cold-@$$ day - yes, we went there twice this past weekend.
It was so cold, everyone was going up this beast on that "Advanced Pace".
Speaking of, some of ya'll were on the fence on joining this trip because of the scrambly sections. You'd read reviews that got you feeling like this might not be for you because it's "Advanced". So you skipped this trip.
The reality is that the scrambly sections, the elevation and the distance aren't what make this hike Advanced (there are literally no universal or inclusive definitions of what makes something beginner or advanced).Β
So what makes a hike Advanced? Your pace and mindset.
Outerthere Trip Ratings are based on years of trying to understand this. They're a more inclusive way to help you prepare yourself mentally because it's basically whether or not your group will be going leisurely, stopping often, barely sweating (Beginner Pace) or fast, trying to wrap it up quick, sweating in below-zero cold (Advanced Pace).Β
The trail doesn't change and everyone will have a different opinion about it that's disconnected from reality: it's "hard" because they went too slow with people who left them behind. It's "easy" because they go to the gym twice a day and are training for a marathon.
A person who goes to the gym every day at 30 is going to think Easy is one thing and a person who goes to the gym every day at 70 is going to think Easy is another thing.
So yeah, I'm going to do a better job of clarifying our trip ratings on the site. But if you want to learn more, tap on the Trip Ratings at the bottom of any trip on Outerthere.com.Β
