HISTORY
"Jim Thorpe was founded in 1818 as Mauch Chunk (/ΛmΙΛk ΛtΚΚΕk/), a name derived from the term Mawsch Unk, meaning Bear Place in Unami, the language of the native Lenape, possibly a reference to Bear Mountain, an extension of Mauch Chunk Ridge that resembled a sleeping bear, or perhaps the original profile of the ridge, which has since been changed heavily by 220 years of mining."

Catch rafters and some of the most gorg scenary in PA from the Lehigh Gorge Trail from Jim Thorpe to Abandoned Tunnel. There's also a bike trail and several bike rental shops nearby.

Jim Thorpe is a major tourist destination with tons of very cute shops and restaurants. If you know you're going to spend your day here, book restaurant reservations in advance. Finally, traffic and parking are really bad, so avoid driving.Β
