Dear Outdoors,

Since the first time we went on that hike with you, we were hooked. The beautiful colors. The sounds. And the sense of adventure. Swoon. You got us good.

You wanted to introduce us to all your friends. And we couldn't wait to meet snowboarding, kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, and everyone else.

But then we met them. And they didn't exactly make us feel like they wanted us around. They said we were great together, but they were gaslighting us. They never liked us together. We weren't invited to things.

You constantly defended us. You told them they should open up and accept us. They should be more careful what they say and do so we don't feel left out. You tried but they didn't really take you seriously.

We're not breaking up. But we definitely need more than just talk. We need to do more than beg your friends to be accepted. We're awesome. We shouldn't have to ask to belong. We belong. And we want to feel welcome all the time, for real. Not just when you're around.

So we're finding our own friends. And our friends will always make us feel welcome. You're invited, of course. Tell your friends they're welcome, too, so long as they treat everyone respectfully.

XOXO,

The Welcome Fund

We believe that outdoor recreation is not an entitlement for a few.

It’s for everyone.

About The Welcome Fund

How It Started

The skydiving manager was anxious all morning.

He ran between different groups with a mix of formalities (waivers, safety video, and payment) and jokes.

One group was particularly diverse, representing Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, France, Nepal, Colombia, and Puerto Rico) and the managers jokes were awkward and falling flat.

While fitting the group for their harnesses, he made some off-color remarks that made the group feel so uncomfortable, they considered canceling on the spot. They did not feel that this manager could be trusted.Β

They stayed because they really wanted this experience. The manager was oblivious.Β

During the preflight instructions, the manager made a final attempt to get friendly with the already-sensitive group by asking everyone's names and where everyone was from.Β

The first person he asked was the Puerto Rican, who proudly said, The Bronx! Β

The manager knew the Bronx and told the group why. He reminisced about the "good old' days" when he and his uncles visited The Bronx to set fire to buildings.Β

If you're not familiar with yourΒ Bronx history, what this manager did was proudly admit to an active role in one of the most tragic and racist episodes in New York City history. Even if he was kidding, it wasn't funny.Β

Suffice it to say, no one in the group ever went sky diving again.Β

Managers like this are more common across the outdoor recreation industry than they should be. And their attempts at being relatable is so bad that according toΒ a study by Pennsylvania State University, 13% of U.S. adults stopped participating in outdoor activities altogether because they simply did not feel welcome.

The study also revealed that the 13% "were significantly more diverse, tended to reside in more urban environments, and earned less annually than existing or new recreationists."Β

Across the country, the outdoor recreation industry in the United States - which includes snow sports, water sports, even hiking and camping - is worth approximately $900 billion and represents nearly 2% of the national GDP.

InΒ New York alone, the outdoor recreation industry created $21.1 billion in economic activity in 2020 and supports over 241,000 jobs with $13.1 billion in compensation.

That said, if the outdoor recreation industry made that 13% of participants feel more welcome, it would potentially add $360 billion more in economic activity while improving marginalized communities' sense of belonging*.

How do I feature TheΒ You Are Welcome Here! (YAWH!) Badge on my website, socials and marketing materials and help boost my top line by 30%?

First, your experience needs to be assessed and scored on 4 core business metrics:

  1. How do you describe your experience?Β The language used to describe your business matters. If the terms used to describe what your business does and how guests are supposed to participate can only be known if they're highly engaged with your business or industry, your business is potentially excluding anyone who is not already engaged.
  2. What equipment is required for your experience? How necessary is specialized gear & equipment in order for a guest to participate in your experience? Do you have a rental fleet or retail inventory for guests? Is it affordable or pricey?
  3. Where is your experience?Β Is it hard to get to? Do you provide transportation?
  4. What are the rules, etiquette and procedures to participate? Do you have them documented and published visibly? Are they easy or hard to follow? What are the consequences and enforcement for not following?

Second, your "welcome score" helps identify areas of improvement. The objective of these scoresΒ  is to provide a business metric to identify key opportunities for outdoor recreation businesses to create a more welcoming relationship with their guests. Welcome Scores range between 1 and 5 (the highest) and are assigned to individual experiences.

Our coaches can then make the improvements with minimal disruption to your business within days. Or we can work with you to help make the improvements (can be immediate or take months). The goal of making these improvements is to drive an increase in your top line sales by as much as 30%.
