When someone mentions an obstacle course race aka OCR aka mud race aka Spartan Race... your face probably cringes. It seems interesting. Maybe even exciting. But, discouraged by the perception that you have to be fit to "run a race", you're probably discouraged from trying it. It's just not for you. In fact, races do attract the alpha types, the testosterone-y types, and cross-fitters who don't always make you feel welcome.
But here's a secret about these races: they're not about racing, they're about finishing. They're about pushing past your mental and/or physical limit. And when you think you can't anymore, they're about the support your team gives you to finish.
You'll find people from all shapes and sizes, with all sorts of disabilities doing these races because they see past myths. They push past excuses. They see themselves just getting out there, having fun in the dirt with their friends, like they used to when they were young. These OCRs allow them to forget problems and just focus on getting from point A to point B.

Pro-tip: When you purchase your tickets directly from obstacle course race organizers, you're seeing a base price for a race. The final price is only available after you complete your registration. After taxes, mandatory insurance, mandatory service and processing fees, and in some cases, mandatory "charitable" donation that you’d pay on race registration websites, the final cost is often 50% more than the published price. Parking fees are also not included, so you may have to pay up to $10 (or even $20) CASH on race day for parking. So, bring cash.
To get a discount, here are some tactics that may work:
Use the official Outerthere discount for a race (if applicable). OR
Search "[name of your race] discounts". You'll be taken to a discount site that'll give you a 10% or more discount on your race. Races regularly distribute discount codes to content creators and wholesalers that are passed on to their audiences. OR
Submit your email, but close the window before you purchase your ticket. Since they'll already have your email, you'll start receiving emails with discount offers in a few days. OR
You can volunteer race day for a free access. The hours aren't convenient, but it's a great way to participate for free. OR
You can reach out to a race organizer via Twitter and request a complimentary admission for creating content for them day of. Just make sure you have a website with similar content to prove you're serious.
